Admissions : Academic Advising

Advising Policy

All first-time freshmen are advised in the Registration office for the first semester. Advisors are available to assist students on an individual basis with problems and challenges which may arise while they are enrolled in the College. Students after their first semester of enrollment will be assigned an academic advisor. Students must meet academic advisors before registering for courses each semester. All students must have registration and other related academic forms completed with the signature of his/her academic advisor. All students are required to participate in academic advising meetings with their individual academic advisor, at least, once each semester. The lists of advisors at the Registration office should be checked to identify the current academic advisor. Students are encouraged to seek advising not only regarding immediate course decisions but also long term academic goals. All faculty are assigned undergraduate advisees, except the Dean. The Dean advises incoming students and also takes over as advisor if the student's designated advisor is not available. When students change their major, the Registrar lets them select an advisor if they already know a faculty member. If they do not make a selection, the Registrar will assign an advisor. A student can go to the Registrar and request a change of advisor at any time. This change can be made provided the number of advisees is less than 40 students for the designated advisor. Students must personally assume the responsibility for completing all requirements established by the College for their degree. A student's advisor may not assume these responsibilities. Any substitution, waiver or exemption from any established requirement or academic standard may be accomplished only with appropriate approval. Advising Goals * To assist students in the selection of courses that will meet their educational goals, and ensure progress towards a degree. * To counsel students on professional and career opportunities, and on graduate studies when appropriate. * To help students with personal problems to find the resources they need to deal with the problems.

Candidate Plan of Study

Candidate Plans of Study (CPS) outline the course work necessary for students to complete a desired degree at SC. All degree-seeking students must file a CPS. The academic and faculty advisors assist students to set up their candidate plan of study (CPS). It is required that a student set up their CPS during their first semester of attendance at SC. All forms related to CPS are available from the academic advisor or the secretary in the Registration office. The CPS addresses the following issues. * the College’s core curriculum * the prerequisite courses for the degree * the transfer of credits from other Universities * the program core and * the actual courses a student selects to fulfill the elective requirements Students should meet with the assigned faculty advisor to complete the CPS. After the academic advisor approves the CPS, the student may request a copy of it.
